A Large turnout of Beef Shorthorn breeders and friends attended the Annual Dinner held in the Greenvale Hotel in Cookstown, on Thursday 17th September 2015. A delicious meal was enjoyed with Beef Shorthorn meat on the menu sourced from Peter Hannon’s award winning Hannon Meats of Moira. Hannon Meats recently hosted a barbeque for the Ireland Rugby Squad in Dublin promoting Shorthorn Beef.

This year Brenda Wear of the Redhill Beef Shorthorn Herd from North Somerset, England, was the Judge for the Herd competition.

She went on to comment that it was an honour to be asked and she knew it would be a difficult task when she accepted. Nothing prepared her for how difficult it would be as there were literally only points between most of the top herds here in Northern Ireland, but that had not stopped her enjoying their time and hospitality shown to her and her partner Graham.

Brenda then went on to thank all those who took the time and effort to enter the herd’s competition. She visited 13 herds travelling many miles over the length and breadth of Northern Ireland and was very impressed by the breeders’ enthusiasm towards the beef shorthorn breed. She commented that she was not looking for show cattle but working stock able to maintain flesh throughout the winter, a balanced herd with functional cows, good feet and milky udders based on a commercial environment and this was why she choose Duncan McDowell’s Castlemount Herd as her Overall Champion Herd with David Alexander’s Craigfaddock Herd in Reserve place. Brenda commented that she had a difficult job choosing her top heifer calf and she feels these young heifers will give the judges at the forthcoming Pedigree calf fair at Balmoral and the Beef Shorthorn’s own Calf Show at Ballymena Mart, a very hard task but this is excellent for the breeders here in Northern Ireland to have such a high standard in their up and coming young stock but her final choice was that of Richard Henning’s Mullaglass Lass 4th.   The Stock Bull section was won by Richard Henning with Dunsyre Esquire, the Brood Cow Class was won by Richard Henning’s Mullaglass Lass, the Heifer group was won by Duncan McDowell, the Young Bull Category was won by David Alexander’s Craigfaddock Hercules and the bull calf class went Cecil and Matthew Graham with Glenvale Jock.

For the second year running The Show Team Cup presented by Capper Feeds to encourage Shorthorn Breeders to support local shows and the breeder with the highest number of points was won once again by Duncan McDowell’s - Castlemount Herd, Denise Bailie – Croobview’s Herd took second place 2nd place and third place went to the Glenvale Herd owned by Cecil and Matthew Graham. It was encouraging to see many new breeders showing this year it is a testament to the ever growing popularity of the Beef Shorthorns.

The Club Chairperson Karen Carson thanked Brenda for taking the time to come over and judge the beef shorthorns herds competition, to the prize winners a huge congratulations and to all those who took part in the competition, their time and effort was much appreciated. She also thanked the Manager and staff at Greenvale for the first class meal and went on to mention that their hospitality and service which was second to none.
