Beef Shorthorn Society and Morrisons launch Suckler Herd of the Year Award
The search is on for the leading suckler herd in the UK. All producers using a registered Beef Shorthorn bull on 30 or more suckler cows within their herd will be eligible to enter the award with £500 cash plus a £250 voucher towards the purchase of a Beef Shorthorn bull at a Society sale at stake.
Herd entries will be judged on technical and financial management, genetics, herd health, marketing and particularly on the performance and impact of Beef Shorthorn within the suckler herd. Entries close on 31 July and judging will take place in September by SAC beef specialist, Ian Pritchard. The award will be officially presented to the four finalists at the Society’s dinner on 22 October prior to the Stirling bull sales. The winning herd will recieve £500 cash plus a £250 voucher towards the purchase of a Beef Shorthorn bull at a Society sale; the three runners up will also receive a £250 voucher.
“Once again we’re offering commercial producers the opportunity to enter the competition, designed to recognise and reward the top suckler herds in the UK using Beef Shorthorn to produce a functional suckler cow with natural foraging ability and the effect that these have on their enterprise,” says the society’s Frank Milnes. “We were very pleased with the response that we received when the award was launched for the first time in 2011 and we are confident it will continue to attract widespread support from farmers across the UK.”
Morrisons’ Andrew Loftus comments: “We are delighted that more and more Beef Shorthorn bulls are being used within the commercial suckler herd. The breed’s undoubted maternal qualities are ideal for producing quiet, milky and long-lived replacement females, while any steer calves command a premium of 20ppkg through the Morrisons Traditional Beef Scheme. Choosing a Beef Shorthorn bull has never made more sense.”
